Story goes that Rugby is the pride of his owner because he was last year's "Christmas Toy" (and he sings: "I'll always remember, how everyone cheered when you opened the ribbon and rugby appeared")... all the old toys have deferred the spotlight to him and he rules with impish vigor.
Until... next Christmas appears and, like a 4-year-old trying to stuff his baby brother back into his mother's vag, he tries to divert the arrival of this year's "Christmas Toy" - the terrible futuristic she-devil "Meteora", who believes she has been brought to punish all of toydom with her attrocities.
In hindsight, "Toy Story" borrows quite heavily from the premise.
Highlights of the special (which I once found on VHS but have subsequently misplaced) was the introduction to the special by Kermit, in full Santa garb, from the house's chimney and the always feared family cat which is known to terrorize toys that get left in the hall.
